Inscription.
The Horse Soldiers, a 1959 film, starring John Wayne, William Holden, Constance Tower and Althea Gibson, attempted to capture the drama of Benjamin Grierson's Union cavalry and through Mississippi during the 1863 Vicksburg Campaign. Director John Fond favored location shooting, and the film stands out among Hollywood Civil War films for its extensive use of authentic southern terrain.

The filming of exterior scenes for The Horse Soldiers took place along the banks of Cane River Lake dating the winter of 1958. Many local people appeared in the movie as extras. As several scenes were short Oakand Plantation, which served as the fictional Greenbriar Plantation, members of the Prud'homme family participated in the filming, including the family dog, Whups.

The City of Natchitoches created granite markers for both John Food and John Wayne as part of a "walk of fame" in recognition of The Horse Soldiers cinematic contributions to the area. In 2019 the walk was dismantled, and the markers were relocated throughout the region as part of the Natchitoches Film Trail.
