St. George’s Anglican Church
Quick Facts: Opened 1890 - Successful basketball teams - 900 in Sunday School 1930
In response to a growing West End population, All Saints Anglican Church on King Street West opened the St. George's Chapel of Ease at Sophia (Strathcona) and Tom Streets in October, 1890. The first minister was Rev. J.W.J. Andrew, and one of the church's first wardens was Walter Teale, part owner of the nearby Hand & Company Fireworks.
- 1894 a bell was placed in the belfry.
- 1893-95 basement rooms rented by the Hamilton Board of Education due to crowding at Pearl Street School (1868-1895).
- 1930 St. Georges Victorias won Junior & Senior basketball championships.
Rapid growth prompted a 32-ft. addition in 1902 and a parish Hall in 1911. Building disrepair and a decline in church attendance from the 1960s onward prompted the eventual closure of St. George's in 1995. Today, the facility continues to support other spiritual initiatives.
Erected 2019 by City of Hamilton.
