Regarding Taix French Restaurant. Taix is one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles. It was founded in a family-owned hotel in Downtown Los Angeles in 1927. Marius Taix, Marius Taix, Jr., and Louis Larquier ran the casual restaurant. Taix moved to its current Echo Park location in 1962, and remodeled and expanded in 1969. In 2022 this site was declared Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 1227.
Fourth generation owner Michael Taix sold the restaurant to real estate developers in 2019 who plan to replace it with a multi-story apartment building, and a new Taix restaurant on the ground floor. In 2020 the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission began discussions on the designation of the Taix building as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. In 2021 it was decided the building would not be a monument, but rather just the property and restaurant features, thereby allowing the demolition and redevelopment to proceed. The only artifacts that would be preserved are the red-and-white Taix sign on the rooftop; a vertical red-and-white "Cocktails" sign along Sunset Boulevard, and the restaurant’s original cherry wood bar top. As of 2023, Silver Lake Heritage Trust is appealing.
