The Cross of Christ
The cross towers high on this mountain top as an enduring symbol that life triumphs over death. The idea for the cross was conceived by Dr. William L. Hogg, designed by architect Warren E. Parkins, dedicated September 9, 1950.
The names of thousands of Sunday School children who contributed dimes to the cross fund are sealed in the foundation.
Mr. Lewis C. Steiner of Latrobe, Chairman of the Cross Committee, made the total cost of the cross his gift to the training center.
Facts: Height; 60 feet on an 8 foot foundation
Total height 68 feet. Cross arms; 33 feet. Weight: 35 tons, anchored into 185 tons of reinforced concrete.
Fabricated by Moore Metal Works of Greensburg, of structural steel made by U.S. Steel Corporation.
