Edifié par Cherpitel en 1770 pour Marie-Florent du Châtelet, fils de l'amie de Voltaire, cet hôtel fut reconnu dès sa construction comme un des plus beaux édifices de Paris. Il demeure un témoignage exceptionnel de l'art décoratif dans les années 1770-1780. Après la mort du duc du Châtelet sur l'échafaud, l'Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées s'y établit mais laisse la place en 1807 à l'Intendance de la Couronne. Sous la Monarchie de Juillet, l'hôtel abrite successivement les ambassades de Turquie et d'Autriche. En 1849, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte l'offre comme résidence à l'archevêque de Paris afin de se concilier le clergé. Depuis la séparation de l'Eglise et de l'Etat, l'hôtel du Châtelet est affecté au ministère du Travail.

Built by Cherpitel in 1770 for Marie-Florent du Châtelet, son of Voltaire's paramour, this hotel was recognized from its construction as one of the most beautiful buildings in Paris. It remains an exceptional testimony to the decorative arts of the years 1770-1780. After the death of the Duke of Châtelet on the scaffold, the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées (lit. “School of Bridges and Roads” - an engineering academy) was established there, but in 1807 gave way to the Intendance de la Couronne. Under the July Monarchy, the hotel successively housed the embassies of Turkey and Austria. In 1849, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte offered it as a residence to the Archbishop of Paris in order to conciliate the clergy. Since the separation of Church and State, the Hôtel du Châtelet has been occupied by the Ministry of Labour.
