War Memorial. Danbury, Connecticut. , Danbury citizens have actively participated in every war that has landed on our own shore as well as those of countries abroad. In each case, community debate has fueled our involvement each time., Danbury citizens have honored and remembered our servicemen and women during times of war. As far back and including the French and Indian, American Revolution, War of 18 12, Civil, Spanish American, both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam and those of the present day., Celebration and sadness have accompanied each wartime period. Each, however, has nurtured an enduring sense of compassion, pride and patriotism. The formation and proliferation of active relief, public service and military based organizations over the years included the Ladies Aid Society during the civil War, the Red Cross, and the local post for the Grand Army of the Republic., Danbury natives have achieved high-ranking status, such as Brigadier General James A. Ryan, a resident of Danbury who graduated from West Point. Others were bestowed honors and recognition such as the Purple Heart. Local resident Lee Hartell received the Congressional Medal of Honor during the Korean War., The building of the Danbury War Memorial at the entrance to Rogers Park and the continual addition of monuments through the city encourage us to remember those from those from Danbury who have served and sacrificed throughout our nation's history.
