Boyne City in Charlevoix County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The Stackus Furniture Store & Funeral Home
Established 1895
— Boyne City's Historical Past —
It is the oldest business still operating under the same family management. The first business was operated by James B. Stackus, a Civil War veteran, who came to the Boyne area in 1875. A cabinet maker by trade he soon had a successful business. Since cabinet makers also provided caskets, his services were needed in this growing community.
In 1895, his son bought the business and set up what was then known as the community's first "undertaking parlor". In 1901, S.B. Stackus became one of the first one hundred licensed practitioners of mortuary science. The business continued to operate at this location until 1912, when the "morgue" was moved to the Stackus residence on Elm Street. The furniture store closed in 1920.
