Regarding War Memorial. Although the monument was dedicated to all local war veterans up to 1916 (the US was not yet involved in WWI), the monument is topped with a Civil War soldier statue and was erected in memory of a local Civil War soldier who enlisted as a Private in the 13th NH Infantry in 1862 and was later commissioned as an officer in, and ultimately, commander of Company B, 19th US Colored Infantry, leading African Americans soldiers from 1863 to 1867 following enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. The regiment served in the Overland Campaign, fought at Petersburg and Richmond, and concluded its service along Texas's Rio Grande valley.
