Houtrijk en Polanen was een ambacht dat tot 1795 deel uitmaakte van het schoutambt Sloten. In dat jaar werd het zelfstandig. Van 1812 tot 1817 was het onderdeel van Spaarnwoude. In 1863 werd het een zelfstandige gemeente en bij Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude gevoegd. Polanen grensde ten oosten aan Osdorp, ten westen aan Houtrijk en lag noordelijk aan het IJ en zuidelijk aan het Spieringmeer.

Houtrijk en Polanen was a settled area that until 1795 was part of the Sloten sheriff's office. In that year it became independent. From 1812 to 1817 it was part of Spaarnwoude. In 1863 it became an independent municipality and was added to Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude. Polanen bordered on the east on Osdorp, on the west on Houtrijk and lay north on the IJ and south on the Spieringmeer.
