Regarding Marquez Filling Station. The gas station was built in 1924 and operated continuously until 2004 - believed to be the oldest continuously operating gas station in Los Angeles. Known as the Canyon Service station, it carried expensive 100 octane gasoline for exotic sports cars and race cars. It is now part of a private residence and well-hidden from the street behind a hedge. The original gas island still exists.

Significance Statement:
The property meets the criteria for LAHCM designation because it reflects the broad cultural, political, economic, or social history of the nation, state, city, or community. It is closely tied to the car culture that shaped the early development of Los Angeles and the Santa Monica area. It is also the last remaining example of an early gas station in the Santa Monica Canyon area.
It is identified with an historic personage, as it was originally owned by Perfecto Marquez, Jr. The property is identified with the Marquez family who originally settled in Rancho de Boca Santa Monica and maintained the land for many years. The
