The property meets the criteria for HCM designation because it reflects the broad cultural, economic, or social history of the nation, state, or community through its association with the residential development of Crestwood Hills, the largest cooperative development in California. Planned to provide 500 houses and community facilities on a hillside site at the edge of the Santa Monica Mountains, Crestwood Hills (formerly the Mutual Housing Association) is one of the few fully realized modernist projects in the state. 2. Miller House Marker
brought together many of the leading figures in post-war Southern California modernism, including master architects A. Quincy Jones (1913-1979), Whitney R. Smith (1911-2002), and engineer Edgardo Contini (1914-1990). Noted photographer Julius Shulman (1910-2009) captured the simplicity and drama of the structures in a series of photographs of Crestwood Hills which have since been extensively published.
