1. Cedarville Marker
Inscription. Cedarville, a thriving trade center for thirty years, was located on the north shore of Cedar Lake. The post office was in existence from 1868-1903. After the post office closed the mail was sent to Monterey. Francis Drugan was the first postmaster. Richard Crandell, Phinneas Dennis and Capt. E.F. Wade were early storekeepers. Capt. Wade was also Justice of the Peace, Notary Public and did much land office and collection business. The town had two stores, a hotel, blacksmith shop, wind grist mill and some homes. The Cedarville School (Dist. 34), the first school in Cedar Twp., was established in 1867. The Chicago and Northwestern and the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroads both by-passed Cedarville in 1899. Cedarville declined rapidly after this. For more information visit the Martin County Historical Society/Pioneer Museum in Fairmont.
