Regarding Gilroy Historic Site No. 14. California Department of Parks & Recreation Historic Resources Form from April 1986 regarding significance
One of the historic businesses in downtown Gilroy, a stationary store has occupied this structure for over 120 years. Originally constructed with a simple, but well defined faηade, the brutality of this stucco mass almost eliminates this as a contributor to any successful urban plan. Again, it must be realized that this structure in form and size has been and can be again a contributor to the commercial diversity of Monterey Street.
A number of merchants have operated stationary stores in this location. Fred Suter, Spongs, and the current Jack Thomas are but a few.
