The Live Oak County community comes together to preserve the legacy of Geronimo..
Preserving Geronimo's Legacy. In 1927, George West's favorite steer Geronimo was preserved and placed in an all-glass structure on the grounds of the Live Oak County courthouse. In 1976, a newly updated Geronimo traveled to Moscow as a part of the 1976 American Bicentennial Exhibition. Geronimo returned home to a newly-constructed enclosure that replaced the original 1927 structure. He remained in this enclosure until 2015 when it was discovered that it was time once again to restore Geronimo.,
Repairs and Restoration. The Geronimo you see before you today is the result of an enormous effort by the local community. Spearheaded by a small committee formed for the George West 100 Year Centennial Celebration, a "Restore Geronimo" campaign was initiated. Privately-raised funds restored the historic Geronimo to his original glory. Outfitted with a longhorn red roan hide and body that reflects his original 2000-pound body, Geronimo stands today as a symbol of Live Oak County's longhorn legacy. Geronimo's glass-enclosed corral mirrors his original 1927 structure and will ensure his preservation for years to come., Captions Upper: This Image shows Geronimo in his original home circa 1965. LOCHO Middle: With his red roan hide and massive horns, the Geronimo you see embodies the legendary longhorns of the past.,
Thank You, Live Oak County. With the help of the Live Oak County Historical Commission, Commissioners Court, Patron Donors, and many others, the history of Geronimo will be preserved for future generations.,
