1. Founding Fathers of America Marker
Inscription. Marker One:

George Washington: 1732-1799
America’s first President, he was called by his fellow revolutionaries the “Indispensable Man” – without him we would still be enjoying tea and crumpets at 4pm. Appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army on June 19, 1775, he refused pay for this service, asking only that his expenses be reimbursed at the end of the war. The War of American Independence lasted until 1783; during those long eight years he would never leave his army.

Thomas Jefferson: - 1743-1826
Jefferson was the principle author of the Declaration of Independence, the third American president, and a passionate advocate of Democratic ideals. With the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the United States, he set the stage for the continental expansion of the United States.

Benjamin Franklin: - 1706-1790
Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, musician, inventor, statesman and diplomat. His many written comments on wine include: “Wine makes daily living easier, lass hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance”.

Marquis De Lafayette - 1757-1834
A great hero of the American Revolution, he was a French Aristocrat and military officer who became as close as a son

to George Washington. At his house in Paris, Lafayette’s children spoke mainly English, and his guests were served by an American Indian butler in full native costume.

Marker Two:

History Hill

As you make the short walk to our historic winery, you will observe historic figures nestled into our green hillside of the Mayacamas Mountains. The Count of Buena Vista dug into the living rock of those volcanic mountains to make the first wine cellars and stone winery buildings in California, thereby enduring his place in wine history.

It is with a profound respect and admiration for important people in history that we present their images upon our hillside.

The groupings we present may spark connections… indeed, many themes exist herein: the story of wine from ancient times to the present, the discovery of the New World, revolutionary heroes in politics and science, the building and creating of the American West, and California wine heroes.

We hope that considering these groupings may bring forth conversations best resolved with a glass of delicious Buena Vista wine. Please enjoy… the journey of wine is the journey of life itself!
