The New Hampshire-born land developer and irrigation specialist Nathan Wilson Stowell (1851-1943) developed his hotel, spending about $400,000 to complete it. The Hotel Stowell had a facade 60 feet long on Spring Street between 4th and 5th Streets and stood 12 stories tall and contained 264 rooms. The hotel was once the home of Charlie Chaplin, and was considered the epicenter of the banking district. After an extensive $25.7 million restoration between 2008 and 2011, the building became loft condominiums, the El Dorado Lofts. The lobby's columns and walls feature prized tiles produced in the early 1900s by the Pasadena-based Batchelder-Wilson Company.
