Poet, editor, and orator.
From here he regularly walked to his newspaper office at the Evening Post, nearly three miles downtown. Here he was brought two weeks before his death at 85 after suffering a sunstroke while dedicating a monument in Central Park to the Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini. The peroration of his final address presaged a coming of civil and religious liberty when the rights and duties of human brotherhood shall be acknowledged by all the races of mankind.
