Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo
1833-1848
On June 14, 1846 Vallejo was taken "prisoner" by a mob of settlers in the now famous Bear Flag Revolt. Rather than fighting back, he let the rebels inside his quarters for a meal and drinks. He was a classy guy. After a short period of negotiation, Vallejo signed a letter of surrender and the Bear Flag Republic was born. The Republic lasted less than 26 days. California was annexed by the United States and became a state in 1850.
Vallejo planted a few hundred vines behind his adobe residence on what is now the historic Sonoma Plaza. Nearby he built a fine mansion, Lachryma Montis (now part of the Sonoma State Historic Park) and planted a larger vineyard. In 1840 he was responsible for the first vineyard in what would become the Santa Rosa area, when he granted the Rancho Cabeza de Santa Rosa to his widowed mother-in-law Maria Lopez Carillo. Vallejo and The Count became quite close, and two of his daughters, Natalia Veneranda Vallejo and Jovita Francisca Vallejo, eventually married Attila and Arpad Haraszthy.
