Inscription. One winter George's parents bought him a shiny new flexible flyer sled. Thereafter George and his father rode together, Mr. Marshall's wide girth adding to the sled's weight and velocity. “I sat in front with a skate on my foot (to guide the sled) and my father would sit behind and was supposed to swing the sled.” On Sundays, the family attended St. Peter's Episcopal Church, where George "pumped” the church organ. He was eventually “fired” from this assignment after getting caught reading a "dime-store” novel.

(Photo Caption): The whole family gathered for George's wedding to the lovely Lily Coles of Lexington, Va., on February 11, 1902. Left to right are George's sister Marie, Lily and George, brother Stuart, George's mother Laura, his father George Sr., and Lily's mother Elizabeth Coles. The column and roof of St. Peter's Episcopal Church are visible from this spot by looking straight ahead.

Erected 2003 by His Royal Highness The Duke of York, KCVO, ADC; Friends of Marshall.
