Regarding Casa Laguna. This is one of eight courtyard apartment buildings designed by husband-and-wife team Arthur and Nina Zwebell in the Spanish Revival style. The 18 apartment complex was built in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1928. Casa Laguna was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2006.
Significance Statement:
The property meets the criteria for LAHCM designation because it embodies the "distinguishing characteristics of an architectural-type specimen, inherently valuable for a study of a period style or method of construction," as an example "Andalusian courtyard housing". It is also associated with the "notable work of a master builder, designer, or architect," as a work by master designers Arthur and Nina Zwebell, who are considered to be Los Angeles' foremost practitioners of the building type. The subject property is the last courtyard apartment building designed and constructed by them.
