Inscription.

This building from the XVIIIth century, both Baroque and Classic in style, was rebuilt on the old mediaeval small church location. There is only one nave. It is worth spending time admiring the wood Rococo carvings and panel painted by João Glama.

Excerpts (in translation): Initially held in a small 13th century hermitage, religious services in the parish of São Nicolau needed a larger space and the hermitage was demolished to make way for the Church of São Nicolau in 1671.

The Church of São Nicolau suffered a fire in 1758. Its reconstruction, completed in 1762, in a mixed neoclassical and baroque style, was designed by Frei Manuel de Jesus Maria and was carried out during the bishopric of D. Frei António de Sousa.

In 1832
