War of 1812 / Mexican War
Concord Township American Hero Memorial
Honor Remembrance Courage Fortitude
(1812-1815) A second war with Great Britain arose over maritime rights. This war forged the US Navy into a capable fighting force. The most prominent American warship was the frigate USS Constitution ('Old Ironsides'), which won every battle it fought.
British troops captured Washington DC in August 1814. The White House was set ablaze, but First Lady Dolly Madison escaped, carrying a portrait of George Washington to safety.
During the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor the following month, Francis Scott Key wrote what would become the national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner.
The Battle of New Orleans saw troops under General Andrew Jackson, assisted by Jean Lafitte's pirates, stop a British effort to break through to the city. The defensive victory came two weeks after a peace treaty had been signed on December 24, 1814.
MEXICAN WAR
(1846-1848) During Texas' fight for independence from Mexico, the annihilation of a small force of defenders at the Alamo in 1836 would provide inspiration to Americans in the Mexican War a decade later.
Congress declared war in May 1846, when Mexico protested US annexation of the Republic of Texas. The next summer, General Winfield Scott captured Mexico City. General Zachary Taylor became a hero when his outnumbered army won the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847.
A treaty was signed in 1848, allowing the US to purchase California and New Mexico for $15 million.
In honor of those individuals who willfully accept the
responsibility to serve and defend this nation
