WAR ON TERROR
(2001- ) A war started on September 11, 2001, when terrorists launched suicide attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing over 3,000 Americans. The selfless actions of police and firefighters on the scene elevated their ranks to hero status. The determined passengers on board a fourth hijacked plane prevented another attack on Washington DC and are remembered by Todd Beamer's heroic words: "Let's roll!"
President George W. Bush responded with a commitment to wage a 'war on terror' throughout the world, starting with the Al-Qaeda network in Afghanistan. American troops were deployed to seek out and destroy terrorist facilities, while deposing the Taliban government, a known terror-sponsor.
To oversee the fight against terrorism in America, the Department of Homeland Security was established. Several terrorist plots have since been thwarted due to extraordinary security measures and increased vigilance around the globe.
Seeking to depose another terror regime, a US-led coalition attacked Iraq in 2003. Precision air strikes preceded a ground assault in March, leading to the fall of Baghdad within a month.
The war on terror continues today.
In honor of those individuals who willfully accept the
responsibility to serve and defend this nation
