A Brothers Of The Sacred Heart School for St. Joseph Catholic Parish
Thibodaux College originated in 1840 as a secular school for boys and was one of the first schools in Lafourche Parish. It was taken over in 1861 by St. Joseph Catholic Church and was managed briefly by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart from 1891 to 1894. The Brothers returned in 1912 to this 6 acre site where St. Joseph Church Parish built the school on property donated by Mrs. Cecilia Blake, granddaughter of Henry Schuyler Thibodaux, founder of the City of Thibodaux.
For 54 years, in grades 4 through 12, the Catholic religious order of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart taught and trained the boys of Thibodaux College here and left a lasting legacy of camaraderie among alumni.
Consolidation began in the 1960's to combine Thibodaux College Catholic School for Boys and Mount Carmel Academy Catholic School for Girls into St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School and Edward Douglas White Catholic High School. In 1965 the school on this site was closed due to damage from Hurricane Betsy and the merger was completed.
