The Vintage Vase (Le Poème de la Vigne)
1877-1882
— Gustave Doré (1832-1883) —
Gift of M. H. de Young 53696
Gustave Doré created this vase for French winemakers who exhibited it at the 1878 Paris World's Fair. Decorating the colossal wine vessel are cupids, satyrs, and bacchantes associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine. The foundry shipped this version of the vase to San Francisco for the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition, after which M. H. de Young purchased and then donated the vase to the de Young museum.

"It’s an incredibly curious work, however. Cherubs cavort with spiders and moths in illicit configurations. Look closely at the details and a bizarre bacchanalia unfolds."(Submitted on September 15, 2023, by Joseph Alvarado of Livermore, California.)
