146th U.S. Naval Construction Battalion - Detachment 1081
Jim completed recruit training at RTC, Sampson, NY followed by Bulldozer Training at Camp Endicott, RI and Construction Training Command, Davisville, RL. He was then assigned to the 146th Naval Construction Battalion (ABCD) Detachment. They were then railroaded to Port Hueneme, CA to board troop ships destined for Okinawa where they would join thousands of fresh troops intended for the final invasion of the Japanese homeland 325 miles distant. Due to the bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the ensuing surrender, Jim said, "It never happened, thank God"!
