This sculpture commemorates Thomas A. Hendricks (1819-1885), who practiced law in Shelbyville, Indiana, before seeking public office. The central figure, a heroic portrait statue of Hendricks, is 'flanked by two allegorical female figures. "Justice," on the left, is indicated by the sword she holds (her scales are missing), and "Enlightenment," on the right, is shown with her tablet and book.
Hendricks served as governor of Indiana, as a United States senator and as vice-president of the United States. He also laid the cornerstone of the current Indiana State House, In 1884 Hendricks was elected vice-president under Grover Cleveland On November 15, 1885, nine months into his term, Hendricks died at his home in Indianapolis.
