Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462, 3rd Marine Air Wing, FMFPAC, RVN
After Boot Camp and AIT, Billy Joe completed initial aviation training at Naval Air Technical Training Command, NAS Memphis, TN followed by further CH-53 Helicopter training. During his first enlistment he also wrestled for the USMC Wrestling Team in 1968 at Quantico, VA; and, was selected "Marine of the Month" in 1969 and "Aircraft Maintenance Man of the Month." In combat he served as a CH-53 Helicopter Mechanic, Door Gunner, & Crew Chief. Billy Joe also completed the SNCO Leadership and Drill Instructor Schools.
