Expert rifleman, leader, and purple heart recipient, Richard participated in many operations against insurgent Viet Cong communist forces while serving in Vietnam. His final active duty assignment prior to discharge was with MP Company, 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
