Corporal Uzenski lost his life for his country on 11 January 2010 at the age of 21. Nick, as point man, and two of his fellow Marines were killed-in-action by small arms fire during an enemy ambush of their reconnaissance mission, although they were able to radio the remaining members of the team prior to succumbing. The actions of the three fallen Marines of Operation Enduring Freedom helped save the lives of the rest of their unit resulting in Nick being posthumously awarded the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal and Purple Heart.
