34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division
During fifteen months in Korea with infantrymen of the 34th, Dick was one of twelve Dragonmen with no mine warfare experience, selected to participate in the first-ever and dangerous frontline training course in mine demolition held by engineers of Charley Company, 3rd Engineer Battalion. During a nine-week period the men located and detonated more than 500 Chinese, Soviet, & American-type mines in three huge, overgrown, and muddy mine fields which were a tactical hazard. The Dragonmen also volunteered to work alongside the Charley Company engineers in flood control and river rescue work.
