Inscription.
Derosier's Market, the oldest continually run in Freeport, opened in 1904 as a grocery store. The same family has operated it ever since then. In 1890, Augustus Derosier, his wife Delia, and their first born son, Philip, emigrated from the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec to Freeport. Augustus found employment here in the railroad industry. Even working for a reported one dollar per day, he was eventually able to save enough money to purchase this building on Main Street and open his grocery store.

The business passed to their son Philip, then to his daughter Alice Wagner, and eventually to her son Richard. In 2001, Richard Wagner turned over ownership to his son Phil Wagner, the fifth generation of this family to own Derosier's. Phil has ushered the store into its second century and continues to run this Freeport institution today.

Augustus Derosier was a good businessman. In addition to the store, he built several houses, including his own home, on Royal Avenue.

As American shopping and eating habits have changed over the last century, Derosier’s has adapted, and the store now devotes most of its operations to take-out food and beverages rather than selling groceries.
