Johannes Carolus Bernardus Sluijters 1881-1957

of women. Sluijters experimented with new art movements, such as luminism (with light effects) and fauvism (vivid, with bright colors), and is seen as a pioneer of Dutch modernism. In 1904 he won the Prix de Rome, a prestigious encouragement prize for young artists. The jury awarded him a four-year scholarship, but stopped it halfway because Sluijters' work was considered 'too modern' due to influences in Paris. This did not stand in the way of a successful artistry and together with Piet Mondriaan and Jan Toorop, among others, he founded the Modern Art Circle in 1910. As an established artist, he portrayed prominent Dutch people and had retrospectives in the Stedelijk Museum. He received the silver and gold medal of honor from Amsterdam, the Grand Prix during the world exhibition in Paris and was twice royally decorated.
