The Medal of Honor
THE MEDAL OF HONOR IS THE HIGHEST AWARD FOR VALOR IN ACTION AGAINST AN ENEMY FORCE WHICH CAN BE BESTOWED UPON AN INDIVIDUAL SERVING IN THE ARMED SERVICES OF THE UNITED STATES.
It is usually presented by the President of the United States of America in the name of Congress. For more information on the Medal of Honor visit www.cmohs.org.
While tens of millions have served in the U.S. military, just over 3,500 men and one woman have received the Medal of Honor, which was first awarded during the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln signed the authorizing legislation in 1862.
Gallantry knows no distinction by race, religion, age or station, and recipients represent all five branches of the service. Scouts and flag bearers, chaplains and medics, privates and presidents, and many more, have all been recognized for their bravery.
All Medal of Honor recipients demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice themselves to save others. Many pay the ultimate price, and more than half of the Medals of Honor have been awarded posthumously.
