Two additional memorials to local individuals who died in World War I are on nearby boulders, along with a boulder honoring all three men. The four markers were dedicated on Memorial Day 1921 to mark memorial trees that had been planted a year earlier by children from Riverside Grammar School.

Regarding Sergeant James P. Quinn. According to his draft card, submitted in the western Chicago suburb Riverside on June 5, 1917, James Philip Quinn was born on February 10, 1895, in Riverside, and at the time of his enlistment was a 22-year-old organ installer for W.W. Kimball Company of downtown Chicago. Quinn is specified on the back of the draft card as "tall" with black hair and brown eyes.

The 1910 census identifies James as the second of six children--and the eldest of four boys--of James J. and Anna Quinn, the owners of a home on "Blackhoff Road" (likely Blackhawk Road). James J. Quinn is identified as a native of Ireland and listed as the manager of a coal company.

Sgt. Quinn did not see action in World War I but was sent overseas as a member of Company A, 332nd Field Artillery Regiment, 86th Infantry Division. In early 1919, while stationed in Camp Logan in Houston, Texas, Quinn became ill. According to contemporary news accounts, Quinn's mother and brother traveled to Houston
