Inscription.
Following the stock market crash of 1929, the United States plunged into the depths of the Great Depression. By 1932, the unemployment rate was a staggering 23%. Over 13 million Americans had lost their jobs.

In a landslide victory, Franklin D. Roosevelt won the Presidential election of 1932 on his "New Deal" platform. He promised that in his first 100 days in office he would go to Congress with programs designed to pull America out of the depression.

You are standing on the spot where, in July 1933, Company V-1781 was organized and men began arriving to begin their new jobs building Arkansas's first state park. Your experience at Petit Jean State Park is part of the legacy of the CCC.

The departments of Agriculture, Interior, and War, operated project camps with the mission of preserving and conserving many of our natural resource areas.
