Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
The Varina commercial Historic District is significant … for its association with the growth and development of Fuquay-Varina in the early twentieth century from a rural crossroads and minor resort to a major tobacco market and important railroad junction. Varina's commercial area is the only substantially intact portion of the business district of the twin towns, and the portion most closely associated with the railroad junction that was largely responsible for the community's existence.

3. Varina Commercial Historic District
The district encompasses most of the north side of the 400 and 500 blocks of Broad Street, seen above, as well as individual buildings on the south side of Broad and on Fayetteville Street.

4. Bank of Varina (ca. 1914)
It was built by Dr. J.M. Judd for the newly incorporated bank, of which he was vice-president (later president). The second floor was offices of the Cardenas Telephone Company in the 1920s.

5. Varina Hotel (ca. 1925)
It was built for Dr. J.M. Judd, A.W. Thompson, and R.M. Dickens as a hotel/retail building. The hotel lobby and dining rooms were on eastern side, with rooms on the upper floor. The building later was used for furniture stores.

6. Varina Supply Company (ca. 1925)
It housed a general merchandise store from the 1920s into the 1960s. Its next-door neighbor, a one-story building also built ca. 1925, originally housed a dry cleaner.

Contractor A.Y. Hairr built this yellow brick-faced building for the Bank of Varina's second home office.
