Inscription. Prior to the 1920s construction of the Antioch School, children from the Elko community and surrounding neighborhoods had to travel long distances by horse and wagon to attend White Oak and Glendale schools. During the over 40 year history of the school there were only two teachers. Ruby Branch Carlton was a teacher here from 1927 until 1962 and was succeeded by Laura Hall Velle. At the continued insistence of families in the area, Antioch School remained in operation as a one-room schoolhouse until 1965. After the school closed the structure was the home of the Fairfield Ruritans. They donated it to Henrico County in 2006. Following a fire, the County constructed this building to resemble the original school.

Erected 2013 by Henrico County. (Marker Number HM2.)
