1. History of Barter Stage II Marker
Inscription.
1830 Constructed as Protestant Methodist Church.
1867 Presbyterian Female Institute established.
1868 Stonewall Jackson Female Institute open. Building used as Chapter House for school's literary societies and YWCA.
1914 Fire destroys Stonewall Jackson School; building closed.
1914-1930 Town uses building as recreation ad storage facility.
1930-40's Barter leases building for use as scene shop.
1961 Converted to small theatre, re-named "The Playhouse", used for children's plays, and avant-garde productions. The Lesson was the first play produced.
1965 Barter purchases property.
1981 Town closes building for safety.
1984 Barter renovates theatre, adds lobby; building re-opened.
1995 Barter adds tiered seating, air conditioning.
2002 Barter expands & renovates building. Adds new stage & The Cafe at Barter Stage II.
