Inscription.
In Hancock County, the granite industry was most significant between the years 1870 to 1910. Franklin and Sullivan became the main source of paving and curbing stones for the major US cities: Boston Philadelphia, Providence, Washington, DC and New York City.

West Sullivan possessed (in Crabtree & Havey, Stimson Granite Co. & others) the largest paving forms in Hancock County and quarried the greatest volume of paving. In addition, Franklin possessed a clear-surfaced granite suited for monumental bases, and a railway for shipping which helped prolong the granite industry into the 1920's. Some local Franklin operators also continued to produce some bridge stone and construction granite until 1940.
