The settlers who first received land grants within the present area of the Town of Carleton Place were four members of the family of Edmond Morphy and three members of the William Moore family. The Moore family's grant stretched from present-day Highway 7 to Lake Avenue, and the central part of town was allotted to Edmond Morphy and his three elder sons, John, William and James in 1819. The village, known for approximately ten years as Morphy's Falls, soon began its growth with grist and sawmills harnessing the power of the mighty Mississippi.

William Morphy was deeded the land in 1819. About the same time the first marriages here were those of Sarah, daughter of George Willis, to William Morphy, and Mary, daughter of Thomas Willis, to John Morphy.

In August, 1837, in The Bathurst Courier at Perth, reporting William Morphy's death said in part:
"Fatal Accident. On Friday afternoon last, William Morphy of Carleton Place, whilst on his way home from this place on horseback, in company with several others, met with an accident from the effect of which he died on Sunday morning last, under the following circumstances. Between this and Joseph Sharp's tavern the deceased and another of the party were trying the speed of their horses when, on approaching Sharp's house at a very rough part of the road, his horse

fell and threw him off, by which he was placed under the animal. Severe wounds causing a contusion of the brain led to his death.......The deceased was a native of Ireland, and has left a wife (Sarah) and family to deplore his sudden death."

After William's death, this location had various owners up to 1907 when William H. Allen and Samuel Allen (publishers) purchased it and housed The Herald Newspaper here. Long-time resident, Wayne Richardson informed us that for a brief stint of 2 years this was the location of a Cola company from New York City that sold Red Rock Cola.

In 1948 The Canadian Tire Corporation purchased the building and opened the First Canadian Tire Store in Carleton Place. Local Canadian Tire employee, Peter McFarlane was telling me that Elmer MacIntyre began selling Canadian Tire parts part time out of his barbershop in Almonte and when The CTC Corp'n purchased the property in 1948, Elmer was the first franchise owner. Canadian Tire Corp'n sold this location in 1971 after building a new store where the Carleton Place Market Square is now, Canadian Tire is now at [H]ighway 7 at McNeely Ave.

Peter recollects the time he was delivering the CTC money pouch to the bank from the Canadian Tire store when he was SHOT TWICE in a robbery. He was [h]it once in the groin and once in the ear, Lucky the guy wasn't much of a shot!!
