Sidney in Delaware County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Joseph J. "Joe" Cycon
Headquarters, 262nd Infantry Regiment, 66th Infantry Division, 12th Army Group
A Motor Maintenance Specialist, Joe, along with the 66th Infantry Division, shipped out of England for France on Christmas Eve 1944 on the Leopoldville, a Belgian Troop Carrier. Unfortunately, the ship was torpedoed and sunk 5 miles from its destination at Cherbourg. 778 soldiers and 14 officers were lost, with Joe being one of the few survivors from his company. Later, near Brittany-Loire in Northern France, the 66th relieved the 94 Infantry Division. Their mission for the duration of the war-to contain the powerful enemy forces of some 50,000 grouped within the pockets left behind at St. Nazaire and Lorient by the victorious Yanks before them- they did exactly that until V-E Day.
Entered Active Duty 5 April 1943-Honorably Discharged 9 February 1946, FL. Dix, NJ
