After Basic and Advanced Artillery specialty training, Spyder was chosen to stay on as an instructor due to his skill in mathematics and ability to capture and hold the interest of students. He served nearly his entire enlistment as an Artillery Fire Direction Specialist-Instructor at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
