Chatham in Barnstable County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
Captain David F. Ryder
Placed in memory of Captain David F. Ryder, born on Bar Cliff Avenue in 1915, who fished out of this harbor for 56 years. Always a hook fisherman, he and his partners landed their catches from the wooden boats "Betty", "Alice" & "Nancy", "Alice & Nancy II" and "Sea Perch". The fish were then iced down and either sold locally or shipped to eager buyers in New York and Boston.
It was Dave, while serving as Chatham Selectman in 1984, who came up with the idea for this Observation Deck. He wanted visitors to get a good view and be safe by separating them from workers on the dock below.
