New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County, Florida — The American South (South Atlantic)
Eldora House
| | Canaveral National Seashore | |
Built on the homeland of Robert S. Nelson prior to 1895, the house that once stood here survived at least six periods of occupation and numerous owners over its 100-year life span. Called the Eldora House but also known as the Home Place in Volusia County records the house was located near the center of the Eldora community. The structure remained a well known landmark after the original village and its residents faded into history.
In 1980 the National Park Service evaluated the house and judged it too costly to restore. Its loss inspired local citizens to work to save the State House, two hundred feet south of here.
Caption The Eldora Home is seen here as it was being fenced off for safety in 1982. Its distinguished exterior hid extensive internal decay.
Erected by National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
