When Fullerton's Masonic Order outgrew its original quarters (the Parker building at Spadra/Harbor and Amerige), it built this impressive Spanish Colonial Revival style building at the corner of Spadra (Harbor) and Chapman. Designed by Frank Benchley and started in 1919, it took nearly a year to build for the sum of $115,000. The style is not ornate, but rather clean-lined and eclectic. The flat tile roof at the back of the building has fanciful Mission Style parapets at both ends, and the front and sides have a skirt-tiled roof and boxed eaves with regularly spaced rafter-like brackets. The front portico with its elevated Neo-Classical entrance is
equally impressive. The Masonic Lodge was a social institution and the center of important social activities and charitable events in Fullerton, especially during the first 50 years of the twentieth century. Many of the city's prominent men belonged to this organization, and as the groups associated with Masons grew over the years, Fullerton for a time had more lodges and chapters than any other community in Orange County.
With its membership beginning to decline in the 1950s, the Masons found it increasingly difficult to maintain and improve the building and, in 1993 they sold the property. The current owners completely rehabilitated the building in 1995, restoring the exterior and many interior elements including the grand meeting room/lodge and the Batchelder tiles.
