Hesper Community. . One of the oldest Society of Friends Congregations in Iowa organized here in 1855. First Meeting House built in 1856. Frame church erected on this site in 1879; destroyed by fire Oct. 22, 1904. Present church built in 1905. First Winneshiek County Fair held September, 1873, on the site one block north of Main Street intersection. Boyhood home of Hamlin Garland (1868-1870) author of “Son of the Middle Border” located two miles west.
