Originally conceived as a luxury apartment project, the building was converted into a hotel and officially opened in 1929. In the 1930s, its Lido Room was a popular hangout for celebrities including director D.W. Griffith and entertainers like Elvis Presley, Bette Davis, and Cary Grant. Italian actor Rudolph Valentino was often seen dancing tango there, and on Halloween in 1936, Bess Houdini conducted a sιance from the roof in an attempt to communicate with her deceased husband, Harry Houdini. Marilyn Monroe used to sneak through the kitchen to the hotel bar for dates with her future husband, Joe DiMaggio. The two later honeymooned at the hotel in 1954.

The Hollywood Historic Site signs were originally installed circa 1999. They were updated and replaced in August 2024.
Regarding Knickerbocker Hotel. Some believe that Valentino was not a regular at the hotel (before it became one) as he died in 1926.

Built as a luxury apartment house in 1925, this later became a hotel. Its Lido Room was a popular hang out. Rudolph Valentino was often seen here dancing the tango. In 1954, Marilyn Monroe would sneak through the kitchen to meet her future husband, Joe DiMaggio, at the famous watering hole. Elvis Presley, Red Skelton, D.W. Griffith, Bette Davis and Cary Grant all lived here. Bess Houdini conducted a sιance from the roof, trying to communicate with her deceased husband, Harry Houdini.
