1. S.H. Kress Department Store Marker
Inscription. Built in 1935 in the Art Deco style as a S.H. Kress Department Store. In 1947, Frederick Mellinger moved his lingerie business, Frederick's of Fifth Avenue, from New York, to its new West Coast location here, creating Frederick's of Hollywood. He restored the striking Art Deco architectural detail. The architect was Edward F. Sibbert. Frederick's innovated countless styles of underfashions, including the world's first push-up bra, the first front-hook bra, first bras with shoulder pads and first water bra.

Erected by Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. (Marker Number 33.)

Also see . . .  Frederick's of Hollywood on Wikipedia. FOH was the leader of the women's lingerie industry, often directly competing with Victoria's Secret. Its flagship store on Hollywood Blvd also housed a lingerie museum, which featured lingerie worn by celebrities from Ava Gardner to Madonna. Most of the FOH stores were found in shopping malls, and people could order from their mail-order catalogs. However, by 2001, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In 2005, the company moved its Hollywood store to the corner of Hollywood and Highland Boulevards. Frederick's of Hollywood is now headquartered in New York City, and its products are available only online through their website.
