Enlisting at the age of 17 which required the signature of both parents, Bob trained as a Sonar Technician and served aboard the Edwards, a Fletcher class destroyer, and saw action and participated in the battles at Saipan, Tinian, Peleliu, Leyte, Suriago Strait, Luzon, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
